Our complete guide to your perfect engagement session!

As a wedding photographer, one of my favorite parts of the wedding journey is the engagement session. It's your first official photo shoot as an engaged couple, and it sets the tone for everything to come. You get to share your love, your story, and your style — and of course, get some stunning photos in the process.

Here are my best tips to make sure your engagement session is everything you dream it to be (and more):

1. Start with a Vision (and a Pinterest Board!) - we don't require this but it helps!

Before we meet for your session, think about the vibe you want your photos to give off. Do you envision something romantic and whimsical in a blooming field? Or something chic and urban with city lights behind you? We have lovely local beaches if that's more your vibe we are beach lovers too!

I always recommend couples create a Pinterest board and share it with me. It gives me a glimpse into your vision — colors, poses, locations, outfits, and overall mood. From there, we’ll create something that feels uniquely you. You can search engagement photos online and share images with us that way too!

Be sure to share your desired editing style (when possible given location and lighting) so we capture images in a way that is most likely to yield that look!

2. Dress to Impress… or Keep It Casual If That’s Your Style

Outfits really make a difference in how your photos turn out. Whether you’re going all-out glam or opting for a more relaxed, natural look, wear what makes you feel confident and comfortable. This is your moment — own it.

A few outfit tips:

  • Coordinate your looks without matching exactly.

  • Think textures and layers — they photograph beautifully.

  • Bring two outfits if you want variety (one casual, one more dressy).

  • Consider clothing that ties in with your wedding colors — it gives your save-the-dates a cohesive feel!

3. Professional Hair & Makeup Can Be a Game-Changer

If it’s within your budget, having your hair and makeup done professionally before the session can make a big impact. You’ll feel pampered and photo-ready, and it can even double as a trial run for your wedding day look. Some brides have their practice hair and make-up session before the engagement session and just ask that the artist soften the look a bit after for portraits!

Plus: fresh nails are a must. We’ll definitely be showing off that ring (and your hands will be front and center more than you’d expect!).

4. Show Off That Ring — and Your Love

This session is about capturing your love story — so don’t be afraid to cuddle, laugh, kiss, or even dance a little during your shoot. The more natural you feel together, the more your love will shine through in the photos.

And yes, I’ll be getting some close-ups of that gorgeous ring — so consider getting it cleaned beforehand so it really sparkles.

5. Think About How You’ll Use Your Photos

Engagement photos aren’t just for social media (though you’ll definitely want to share them!). They’re perfect for:

  • Save-the-dates

  • Wedding websites

  • Invitations or RSVP cards

  • Guestbooks

  • Decor at your wedding reception

  • Framed prints for your home

Knowing how you plan to use them can help guide decisions about outfits, colors, and location.

6. Let’s Choose the Perfect Location Together

Not sure where to shoot? That’s what I’m here for! I’ve got a list of favorite spots — from scenic outdoor trails to sleek modern spaces. But I also love shooting in meaningful places, like where you had your first date, your favorite coffee shop, or your wedding venue itself.

We’ll work together to find a location that complements your style, story, and vision.

Final Thoughts

An engagement session isn’t just about getting pretty pictures — it’s about celebrating your relationship in a way that feels real, joyful, and completely “you.” It’s also a chance for us to get to know each other before your big day, which helps everything run even more smoothly when the wedding comes around.

So bring your love, your laughter, your vision — and let’s create something beautiful together.
